Winter Olympic Training? No it’s just Surrey.

By Community Correspondent- Rebecca Oldham

December’s lack of club, college and recreational sport behind us after the annual party season, January has always proven to be a time looked forward to by fellow sports participants, getting back into training, losing the excess holiday weight from Christmas. However the first week of January 2010 had other ideas for those looking to get back to the Astroturf, rugby pitches and roads.

The week long spread of snow not only stopped the local clubs from using their facilities safely but also numerous major ties between premiership clubs in both rugby and football having to be postponed until the end of the season. Some snow based fun was seen from the Chelsea squad, who instead of training started a snow ball fight between each other, even roping in manager Carlos Ancelotti.

Instead of the traditional winter sports of football, rugby and hockey, the more abstract sports seen in Surrey included snowboarding, sledging and even igloo building. The hundreds of college and school children around the local area who were granted the day off from their education spent the day crafting original snowmen and starting snowball fights between each other.

As the snow clears the reality of training and important fixtures will resume as of this week for many local clubs around the area.
