Bees midfielder Marcus Bean has warned Brentford will need to be switched on if they are to avoid a shock FA Cup first round exit at Gateshead on Saturday.
Boss Andy Scott’s men crashed out at Blue Square Premier side Barrow in the second round last season after being reduced to ten men when Ben Hamer was given his marching orders for deliberate handball.
The trip means Brentford will have spent 940 miles on the road in the space of a week by the time they return to west London on Sunday, having made the journey to Exeter City seven days previously.
And Bean, who was at QPR when the Loftus Road outfit lost to Vauxhall Motors on penalties in 2002, reckons there is no room for complacency.
“There has been a few text messages going around among the squad cursing our luck about another long away trip,” he said.
“It is going to be a tough game. I know a few people playing at that level and they have warned us about them. It is a tough place to go.
“The FA Cup is a mental thing. You have got to be mentally up for it other wise you will be turned over.
“I was injured when QPR lost to Vauxhall Motors, and that was definitely a case us not turning up mentally. The manager wasn’t very happy as you can imagine.”
Brentford’s next three games: Nov 7 Gateshead (a), 14 Millwall (h), 21 Walsall (h).
